As you’ve likely heard from Google, ‘all Universal Analytics services cease to function starting July 1, 2024.’ Fortunately, there’s still an opportunity to export and backup your UA data before it disappears forever.
If you don’t want to lose all your data, you need to take action.
How much is enough?
Some companies will only need a static report
with a few high-level monthly metrics.
However, many companies will require a comprehensive backup that can be used to generate a variety of ad-hoc reports. Also, they’ll need access to full lists of dimensions. Moreover, it will be important to be able to choose custom time periods – and not be limited to only monthly numbers.
Google doesn’t backup UA,
but we do.
Google isn’t offering a solution for backing up UA data. The process is just too complex to create an automated approach suitable for every scenario. Therefore, another approach is necessary, which must include the following:
- someone with in-depth knowledge of how Google Analytics data is structured,
- someone capable of assessing an organization’s UA data requirements,
- the right set of tools, and
- someone who knows how to use them.
We have the expertise, and we’re pleased to announce we now have the right set of tools. We’ve teamed up with a technology provider who has developed the only true UA backup system on the market.

What you’ll get
FAQs
+ How many Views do I need to back up?
Many companies only need one View backed up. However, this depends on your particular circumstances, which your expert can provide guidance on. The charge for the 3rd-party UA backup technology is $99 per View.
+ How far back can my date range go?
You can go right back to the beginning as there isn’t a restriction on the time period. However, your expert may suggest a shorter period to keep you within your 10 million row budget per View.
+ Will 20 million rows of data be enough?
For the vast majority of websites, the answer will be yes. If you need more because you’ve got a large site, you can purchase 10 million additional rows for $99. Alternatively, your expert may be able to provide you with options on how your data can be moderately streamlined so you can stay within the limit.
+ What can I do with the Looker Studio report? Do I own it?
The Looker Studio dashboard report comes with 20+ pages of pre-built, interactive charts and tables that are ready for analysis. This provides instant access to your backed-up UA data. There’s no subscription fee involved – the report gets saved to your Google account and is yours to keep and use indefinitely. Furthermore, you may to customize it as you please.
+ Is this a monthly service?
No. The cost of the 3rd-party UA backup technology is a one-time fee, while the cost of your expert is determined by how much time they dedicated to your project. These fees end once your project is complete.
+ Are there any other costs involved?
In most cases, there won’t be. However, there are a few considerations:
- The recommended storage option is BigQuery. It’s a data warehouse within the Google Cloud Platform. Google offers a very generous free tier – and your backup will likely exist within it. However, going beyond the limits of the free tier will initiate pay-per-use billing. Feel free to discuss this further with your expert. Also, if you don’t have a team member capable of working within Google Cloud Platform, your expert can manage this work for you. The time spent doing this will be factored into your project cost.
- The focus of this project is to backup your data. Although the provider of the 3rd-party UA backup technology has made every effort to make your data usable, how you decide to use it is a separate project with its own costs. Feel free to discuss this further with your expert.
+ What’s BigQuery, and is it a good storage option?
BigQuery is storage designed for analysis. It’s fast, relatively inexpensive, and is part of the Google Cloud Platform.
There are many benefits to backing up your Google Analytics data to BigQuery, such as:
- Google offers a free tier, which your project will likely exist within.
- You own your data; you can move it elsewhere if you ever wanted to.
- Your stored data is 100% unsampled, which makes it very high quality.
- Combining Looker Studio and BigQuery to explore your Google Analytics data makes for an excellent experience as it’s fast and reliable.
+ Who’s behind this 3rd-party UA backup technology?
As Google Analytics Trusted Testers since 2010, they’ve been a leading solution provider for enterprises and agencies working with UA data.
Their clients consist of Google Analytics Certified Partners, agencies, consultants, and global brands in over 30 countries.
Their clients include ING Direct, Cardinal Path, L’Oreal, Starbucks, Zipcar, Intel, Hootsuite, and Asics.
We’ll gladly share the name and website of our technology partner, and you may feel free to deal with them directly. With, or without, our assistance – their cost to you would be the same. However, their business model is to work with organizations large enough to have internal data teams. Therefore their support resources – both documentation and support staff – are geared to support data experts. If you would like to get a sense of whether or not you have the internal resources to manage this project, you can attend one of their weekly webinars where they discuss the process.
+ Can you provide a quote for this work?
We provide a cost estimate, but not a quote with a set cost. Although we understand the want to limit a future cost, the nature of this project work makes it impossible to forecast everything that will end up being required. Your expert will work with you to ensure you’re kept aware of how costs may be straying from the original estimate.
We’ll work with you to save your data before it’s gone.
Let’s get started.
